Hey {{first_name | there}},
Sam Altman went on a podcast and said that AI is not going to free up our time.
His words:
"Technology, for a long time, has been promising people that they're going to work less and they're going to have all this leisure. But somehow we never get the promise of the four-hour workweek at mass scale in society. And I don't expect AI to change that."
His reasoning? He just blamed it on us, the users.
That we keep wanting to do more. That we invent new problems and compare ourselves to others. And secretly, we’re all happy grinding.
So the man who profits every time you open ChatGPT to get more done at work is the one telling you that your desire to work less is just a character flaw.
Convenient, right?
What The Actual Data Says
Well, Sam Altman couldn’t be more wrong. Let's look at what happened when companies actually tested shorter workweeks.
The UK ran the world's largest four-day workweek trial with 61 companies and nearly 3,000 employees.
The results:
- 39% of employees reported lower stress
- 71% reported reduced burnout symptoms
- Employee turnover dropped by 57%
- 90% of companies kept the four-day model after the trial ended
Microsoft Japan ran its own test. Productivity went up by 40%.
So the data CLEARLY doesn't say humans are secretly addicted to being busy. The data says humans do better work when they're less exhausted. Weird how that works.

AI is Making You Work MORE
Here's what’s really happening.
AI tools were supposed to give you back time. But a 2026 Harvard Business Review study found that employees with AI worked at a faster pace, took on a broader scope of tasks, and extended work into more hours of the day, often without being asked to do so.

AI isn't buying you a four-day workweek. It's buying your employer a denser eight-hour day from you, at the same cost.
You save two hours, and your manager fills it with two more tasks. You close your laptop at the same time you always did, just more tired.
Now think about this in context of what's happening with jobs simultaneously.
Over 78,000 tech jobs disappeared in just Q1 2026, with 48% of those cuts explicitly tied to AI automation. Amazon posted a record $716.9 billion in revenue in 2025 and still laid off thousands.
So the productivity gains from AI are going somewhere. They're just not going to you.
The Part That Should Bother You The Most
Altman's framing is psychologically brilliant, by the way.
If the problem is your competitive human nature, then there's nothing to fix. No failure to point at, no promises to revisit.
You’re the problem and the technology worked perfectly. You're just too ambitious to enjoy it.
That's not an explanation. That's a redirect.
What This Means For You
You are probably using AI tools daily. Maybe you're building with them. Either way, ask yourself this question honestly:
Where is the time you've saved with AI actually going?
Because if you're a founder or a builder, the answer might actually be different from the average corporate employee. A solo operator who saves two hours with AI can keep those two hours.
That's real leverage. But only if you protect it intentionally.
Most people don't. They fill it. New features. New projects. New tabs.
Altman isn't entirely wrong that humans keep expanding their ambitions. That part is true. But the reason we don't have a four-day workweek isn't a design flaw in human psychology. It's a design choice by the systems we work inside.
Companies that tried it proved it works. And then 90% of them kept it permanently.
So the next time someone tells you that AI will transform the world but can't manage to give you a day off, ask them who benefits most from you staying at your desk.
The answer will tell you everything.
Let me know what you think. Does AI make you work more or less? Genuinely curious.
